چکیده

Recent studies of heavy r–process elements in low [Fe/H] halo stars have suggested that an initial population of metal-free very massive stars (VMSs) may be required to provide early Fe enrichment without coproducing heavy r nuclei. We find similar abundance trends in α–elements (which should be copiously produced by VMSs), but not in other elements such as carbon (which should not), in agreement with this hypothesis. We then combine the corresponding level of prompt initial enrichment with models of VMS nucleosynthetic yields and spectra to estimate the corresponding ionizing fluxes. The result suggests that there may have been enough VMS activity to reionize the universe. The unusually hard spectrum of VMSs would imply a different reionization history from canonical models. Heii could have been reionized at high redshift, only to recombine as a subsequent generation of stars formed with a “normal” initial mass function. Early chemical enrichment of the universe and the role of very massive pop III stars

In this paper the role of very massive pop III stars in the chemical enrichment of the early universe is discussed. We first compare our predictions with the abundance ratios measured in the high redshift Lymanα forest to check whether they are compatible with the values predicted by assuming that the early universe was enriched by massive pop III stars. We conclude that to explain the observed...

The Metallicity of Pre-galactic Globular Clusters: Observational Consequences of the First Stars

We explore a scenario where metal-poor globular clusters (GCs) are enriched by the first supernovae in the Universe. If the first stars in a 10 M⊙ dark halo were very massive (> 180 M⊙), then a pair instability supernova from a single massive star can produce sufficient iron to enrich 10 M⊙ of pristine, primordial gas to [Fe/H] ∼ −2. In such a scenario, where a single massive star acts as a see...

Do We Need Stars to Reionize the Universe at High Redshifts? Early Reionization by Decaying Heavy Sterile Neutrinos

A remarkable result of the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) observations is that the universe was significantly reionized at large redshifts. The standard explanation is that massive stars formed early and reionized the universe around redshift z ≈ 17. Here we explore an alternative possibility, in which the universe was reionized in two steps. An early boost of reionization is provi...

First Galaxies: Exploring the Reionization Epoch

Executive Summary: Studies of the nature of the first galaxies, and of the processes that led to their assembly and buildup, are of compelling importance. Not only did the first generation of galaxies likely reionize the universe, but they also were the seeds for the diverse population of today’s galaxies and the massive black holes that reside in them. Star formation in the first galaxies was ...

Inhomogeneous Reionization Regulated by Radiative and Stellar Feedbacks

We study the inhomogeneous reionization in a critical density CDM universe due to stellar sources, including Population III objects. The spatial distribution of the sources is obtained from high resolution numerical N-body simulations. We calculate the source properties taking into account a self-consistent treatment of both radiative (i.e. ionizing and H2 -photodissociating photons) and stella...
